Spanish Weddings

Religious people usually get married in church. In big cities, they sometimes choose to get married in a cathedral. People who are not church-goers have civil ceremonies. Fifteen years ago, a new kind of civil wedding began. People started to get married at city hall and then have a ceremony in the garden of a restaurant with all the family.

The bride does not always wear a traditional white dress, symbolizing purity. They wear different colours and combinations: green, red, violet. Some even wear black. The groom wears something which matches the bride’s clothes.

When the guests leave the church, the guests throw rice or flowers at the couple. After eating a meal in the restaurant, the couple receive wedding presents from the guests.
