Peter, a long distance lorry driver, gives a lift to a 16 year old hitchhiker outside the city of Bristol.

As the two of them talk, Peter discovers that John has run away from home after a violent row with his uncle. The police are searching for John. His uncle has been found dead and the police want to question the boy.
