The Covered Market

The Covered Market is a historic market in Oxford. There are permanent stalls and shops in a covered building. The market was opened in 1774. It was created so that stalls could be moved off the busy streets and into one central area. The market once contained over a hundred stalls but originally the shops were much smaller with tiny fronts. Today there are many traders in the Covered Market. There are greengrocers and butchers. There are also gift shops, florists and sandwich shops. The covered market is a very busy area. It is popular with tourists.
